People who are desperate to lose weight are keen to follow any which diet they come to know about. Dr Vinay Jadhav states that gluten-free diet is known to be one such diet which people follow expecting magical results in the form of weight loss and other health benefits like a decrease in lactose intolerance. Dr Vinay Jadhav points out that the gluten free diets are mostly advised to people suffering from the coeliac disease wherein they have an allergy to gluten products. For such cases, a gluten free diet is a medical directive and has nothing to do with weight loss or management.

Dr Vinay Jadhav explains that gluten is a composite protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Normally, people assume that they are sensitive to gluten and go on a gluten free diet. Some also believe that by eating gluten free food they are eating healthy food. Dr Vinay Jadhav says that people do not know the dangers of a gluten free diet if they are not suffering from coeliac disease. Dr Vinay Jadhav advises that normal people should not go on a gluten free diet just because it is a fad diet.

Dr Vinay Jadhav explains that a gluten free diet includes foods like meat, fish, nuts, legumes, rice, fruits and vegetables. It does not include any foods that contain wheat, rye or barley or even foods which are transported with these components. To follow a strict gluten free diet, one has to decontaminate the entire kitchen and store room to get rid of any wheat, rye or barley products.

Dr Vinay Jadhav clarifies that when normal people go on a gluten free diet they exclude highly nutritious foods in their diet with gluten free products. Even if gluten does not have a nutritive value, but the whole grains that contain it do. Thus, those not suffering from coeliac disease or from gluten sensitivity are actually messing with their nutrition.

Dr Vinay Jadhav further explains that a gluten free diet can result in a serious body reaction when gluten is reintroduced in the diet. This is called as gluten cross contamination. When gluten is totally removed from the diet, the body will get used to its absence, but once it is reintroduced, the body will strongly reject it. The body will respond in the form of diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, reflux, gas, nausea or vomiting. These symptoms will start to show sooner than later. Other symptoms of gluten cross contamination include fatigue, joint pain, brain fog and gluten induced depression.

Dr Vinay Jadhav also sheds light on the fact that a gluten free diet might hinder the amount of fibre that the body needs. If the body does not get enough fibre, which it usually receives from whole grain products, a person may suffer from constipation. In such cases, people have to add other sources of fibre in their diets, which is a mess and may not be followed as regularly as expected. No matter what, the expected fibre content may not be reached due to this diet. Dr Vinay Jadhav reveals that a gluten free diet will also rob the body of iron and B vitamins which whole grain products readily provide to the body. He stresses on the fact that a compromise on nutrition should not be entertained because the vitamins are an essential part in the proper functioning of the body.
Anybody on a gluten free diet has to constantly keep in check their vitamins and fibre levels. So this gluten free diet is more than a pain to expect weight loss.

Dr Vinay Jadhav advises people to not just follow fad diets but know about them. The nutrition the body requires to remain strong and healthy cannot be compromised for a fad diet. It has to be taken care of and instead of following a diet of this sort, one must embark on a holistic weight management program after consulting a doctor. Medical history and conditions like coeliac disease are the reason why a gluten free diet was introduced. It was a solution to the pains of the people suffering from this disease and not for people to expect weight loss or gain of any kind. Although people with lactose intolerance, gluten sensitivity have experienced some relief due to this diet, it is certainly not something to opt out for if you are a health enthusiast. Dr Vinay Jadhav advises people to consult a doctor before embarking on any kind of diet.
